Artist's Comments

Oils, 24 X 36. Inspired by the song "Everything Beautiful is Far Away" (by Grandaddy).

Now I'm going to use the "artist's privilege" and babble just a bit..

Originally it was just intended to be something a bit whacky and fun (and it was a ton of fun), but it turned into something a bit more humorously philosophical after my current class instructor noted the sense of ordinariness in the whole thing. "It's so non-chalant!" she said. "He's just sitting there, thinking 'Well, what do I do now?'. Why did you paint it this way?" I wasn't quite sure what to respond with, so I said "Because that's just the way life works. It never stops being wonderful or funny." Yeah yeah, it's cheesy, I know - but it's enormously true, and that's what this painting is all about. No matter our situation, we must always be looking ahead, and never take ourselves or our predicaments too seriously. The thought, "Well shit, what the hell do I do now?" has definitely crossed everyone's mind at some point, and the challenge is to run with it, and not to mope. Like our Astro-hero in the painting, it's up to us to just sit, have a smoke, and collect our thoughts when we're not sure what to do next.

There's a story to these boxes. While I was painting them, someone told me about a Richard Gier movie in which he plays a British soldier who ends up blowing himself up by flicking a cigarette into a box of ammunition. That's a horrible retelling of whatever that movie was, but it inspired me to write "Caution! Live ammunition!" on the boxes on the top. But then I got to thinking, "why is he just transporting ammo? That's kind of dumb", so the bottom boxes read, from right to left: Astro Burgers Inc.; Pluto Tele-com; Indigo Books; Deutsche-Grammaphone. Why those, you ask? Well, if he uses what he's got in those boxes, he won't have it so bad on his alien planet. Provided he chooses not to flick his cigarette into the ammunition first. :)

I like this a lot. Great concept. Cool wrecked blimp/ship.

This is awesome, and I agree with your point. I don't believe in sulking/moping because it gets you nowhere.

Bees and dogs can both smell fear. Coincidentally, they both also like to sniff crotches. Therefore I must conclude that fear originates from the pelvic region.

Great concept. Besides, everybody knows that the best way to figure shit out after a major disaster is to sit, have a smoke and drink a coffee.
