Blackout by Jammers Blackout by Jammers
Oils, 36 X 36.

Wow. Can't believe I got a DD on this. A lot of people made a similar comment - that this looks like a photo at first. It's not - it was painted the good old fashioned way, with oils. The brightest parts have the least amount of paint - the highlights on the face have actually been wiped out, with hints of pure, translucent Raw Sienna showing through. Same thing for the top of the couch, and parts of the arms. Anyhow, thanks to everyone who took a bit of time to look at my painting. I appreciate all the comments a great deal!

One last thing - to all who were interested - this piece is titled after the Muse song of the same name.

This particular piece is a good example of doing everything right in a painting. The placement of the figure beyond the leading pillow open into a spatial dimension that is well defined by atmospheric lighting and shade. An understated palette adds to the dynamic of wonderfully convincing textures throughout, delivering the perfect illusion intended.
You have something very strong here and I would suggest exploring it through additional works of similar value and compositional characteristics.

Excellent -- every texture you've painted is different and uses light differently, from cloth to skin to paper. Amazing.

I'm not sure if it's her appearant ethinicity or the strong light that gives me the feeling of a tropical setting - Phillipines, perhaps - and after that thought, noting the sofa or bunches of giant pillows, I thought, "Man, the AC's gotta be blasting in that room for her to not sweat a drop at all."

Haha.. cool comment.. I can really see how it does seem tropical. In fact this is just the couch in my boring, Canadian living room, and she was sitting reading the newspaper just as the sun was rising, flooding the room with light from the window behind. But maybe it could be the Phillipines in the 'spirit of the picture' or whatnot :)

This a painting of a real person?
Whether or whether not it is, it is excellent!
The woman in the picture... if she's real, I'd
like to sit next to her!

Wow.. holy crap. I logged on today to find 625 new messages. Whacky.

Thanks everyone for all the comments.. this was a really special piece for me. It was not painted live, unfortunately - I was only able to catch the girl on the couch for just a second with the camera. I knew right away that is why it worked so well - she didn't know her photo had been taken. I can see how she may not seem to fit with the rest of the couch, as it's done more realistically, but in the original painting I think the colours work a bit better and the difference is less noticable.

Anyway, thank you again everyone for your comments - this is super cool!
